WTDP? cornered guitar slinger Gilby Clarke as he was wolfing down a turkey sandwich after his trio rocked out the Rock The Bayou faithful in Houston. Gilby has been a busy man lately between TV commitments, touring and producing records. He recently produced four records back-to-back from artists Silent Rage, Crash Kelly, Motorchrist and The Alarm. Now, Gilby is planning his own record… a follow-up to 2007’s self-titled disc on Spitfire Records. WTDP? got the low down on the recording plans, plus a run down of the gear his is using during this most recent spate of tour dates.

‘It’s time to make a new record and get some new music out,” said Clarke.
Gilby said he’ll be taking his band, which includes Muddy Stardust on bass and Dennis Morehouse on drums into the studio for the new disc, but he doesn’t plan to go very far.
“I have a great studio at my house,” said Clarke. “I have a full-on tracking room, control room.”
Clarke added that recording should start as early as next week and is targeting the disc for a late spring/early summer release.
On the gear front, Gilby gave us a run down of his current live set up as well as his new passion in amp land. First up, the pedal board…
“I’ve got a modified Wah-wah from Dunlop,” he said. “It’s a standard Cry Baby, but I had them put the lights on top so I can tell when it’s on or off. Then I have a Tube Screamer that’s been modified by Analog Man. The Line 6 pedal is just the standard DL-4. I have a couple of delays in their and then one I usually tap the tempos. I’ve been using the Boss one for a long time, but it just broke right before I came out here. For this gig I really don’t use that many pedals. It is usually just a gain pedal and of course a tuner… gotta double-check the tech!”
For Rock The Bayou, Gilby pumped his sound through JCM-800s, but admits having a growing affinity for a certain boutique amp nowadays.
“Today I used a JCM-800, 50-watt amp, but I have actually recently switched over to Matchless,” he said. “I’ve been using a DC-30 and I love it… just love it. When I got turned on to them, what I loved about it, was number one it is only 30 watts and it really had everything I needed. I play a lot of rhythm so I need to have that response… than ‘chank’, you know. It doesn’t get any better than that DC30. I’m extremely happy with it. I play Les Pauls, so dirty is the lead position and my clean is rhythm pick-up.”
The two Les Pauls he used at this show were both classic 60s. The gold top is chambered and Billy Rowe from Jetboy reliced it for him…
“About a year ago, I got the guitar from Gibson and it was a sunburst,” admits Clarke. “I really wanted a gold top, but they didn’t have one at the time. So I gave the sunburst to Billy and he put the gold top on and reliced the whole thing for me. He did a great job.”
