Fairfield plots Randy’s Revenge!

Guillaume Fairfield of Fairfield Circuitry – maker of the Barbershop overdrive – has uploaded a video demo of his latest creation – Randy’s Revenge ring modulator. According to Guilliaume, the pedal does the clang thing, the bell tones, the pulsations, the deep bass, the needles in your ears, the ‘what’s that strange melody following me’ and the sweet, yet tart. The pedal sports a Sine or Square wave voltage-controlled oscillator with sub audio range for deep trem/vibe effect, a low pass filter and a wet/dry mix for those times when you only need a little bit of that atonal grime. A waiting list for the pedal, which will retail for C$350.00, has started. Peep the video after the jump!

Taking flight with Pelican’s guitar duo

Chicago’s Pelican has been churning out guttural rock instrumentals since 2001. The four-piece is known for its dense combinations of unique melodies, time signatures and jam-band style track lengths. My first exposure to the group was their fine 2007 full-length album City of Echoes – a droning opus fueled by a twin guitar attack. Fresh from a recording session of new material in the Pacific Northwest, WTDP? had the opportunity to chat with the group’s guitarists – Laurent and Trevor – about their gear, their forth-coming EP and plans for the future.

Mad Professor demos the Sweet Honey

The Mad Team over at Mad Professor has posted a couple of different videos demoing the soon-to-be released Sweet Honey Overdrive pedal. We’ve been gushing about this pedal since NAMM and now you will get to see why. The touch sensitivity of this thing is a marvel. I’m terrible at tweaking my guitar’s volume knob on the fly, so this stomp is the perfect solution for my imperfect dexterity… and it’s a great sounding drive to boot! There are two videos – one with the pedal and a Les Paul and one with a Tele. Both sound great! Check out both demos after the jump… then jump on a waiting list!

Wilson Effects shows off new silicon fuzz

The crew over at Wilson Effects has posted a new video on You Tube showcasing the latest from their workbench – a silicon-based fuzz stomp. The pedal sports four knob controls including the standard Volume, which supplies level, and Fuzz, which adds the distortion. The Silicon Fuzz also comes with a Tone control and a Cut control, which enables the user to roll back the volume of the fuzz via the pedal instead of using your guitar volume control. The results sound pretty cool… but don’t take our word for it. See the video in all its glory after the jump!

Montgomery eyes limited run ‘77 Flanger

Montgomery Appliances is set to create a run of ten ‘77 Flanger Model IV to be ready for delivery in June. The new iteration will feature an updated circuit that offers more headroom, a wider sweep and better fidelity overall. The pedal will include five knob controls: Threshold, Manual, Range, Rate, and Depth. It will also sport footswitch control of even and odd harmonics, a vibrato switch, external master volume control, and expression control of manual knob for wah-like flanging control. More details will be provided as features and builds are finalized. The company estimates the price for the limited run pedal to be $349.00.

Rain doesn’t dampen Dallas guitar show

The weather cleared up in time to make Saturday and Sunday great days to be at the 32nd Annual Dallas International Guitar Festival. WTDP? made the drive from our Houston HQ to see what we could see, which on Saturday was former Astro great Craig Biggio, former Steely Dan axeman Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter, a ‘fly-by’ in the PRS booth by Austin’s own Eric Johnson… and a bunch of pretty guitars! The festival did seem to suffer a bit from the economic gloom gripping the country… there were several more empty booths than at last year’s show and the Saturday crowd, while good, was manageable. Take a look at some of the pics we took at the show after the jump!

A Great Wall of fuzz from Fuzzhugger

April 17, 2009
Industry News>

FuzzHugger(fx) has released their third original fuzz pedal, this one being a wall of fuzz as thick and high gain as they come! The Great Wall fuzz features a more gained-up tone with a huge bottom end. With five flexible controls, including a bypass toggle for its flexible tone filter, the Great Wall pumps out high gain, densely-packed fuzz. The controls take things from dark and fat, to open, to focused, to ragged, and back to huge! Flipping the tone bypass toggle allows for one more way to open up the pedal, giving you an unfiltered raw, full-on tone! Available in several wall-inspired graphics, the pedal is available now for $125.00

Reinhardt scares up Willard stomp

Bob Reinhardt of Reinhardt Amps has the first of a series of new pedals up for order. The initial stomp is called Willard, and as the name suggests it’s a clone of the old ProCo Rat distortion pedal. Bob said the original big box Rat was his favorite pedal from back in the day and he wanted to try to recreate those old tones. Assembled with NOS chips from that era, to get as much of the 80’s as possible into one box, the pedal boasts three knob controls – Volume, Filter and Distortion. The initial run of the Willard is available now through Reinhardt. The pedal is priced at $199.95. Next up, Reinhardt is expected to offer a boost pedal. Stay tuned!

Whetstone analog phaser in stores now

Blackout Effectors – once Canadian-based, but now in the USA – has shipped its anticipated Whetstone analog phaser to dealers. The pedal offers up the vintage sound of an analog OTA-based phaser melded with contemporary parameters out the wazoo. From classic and not-so-classic, subtle and over-the-top phase tones to seasick pitch vibrato, ring mod, glitchy octave effects, to outright strange phased/autowah/tremolo-like hybrid sounds. There is a sweet demo video out at ProGuitarShop.com if you’d like to hear what the Whetstone is capable of. The pedal sells for $265 and is available now!

Dallas International Guitar Festival is this weekend

Jimmy Wallace and his crew throw a top-shelf guitar show and this year’s 32nd Annual Dallas International Guitar Festival looks to continue the trend. Running 17-19 April, the show – held at Dallas Market Hall – is bringing in an A-list of manufacturers, sellers and performers to both tempt and entertain! Gibson, Fender, PRS and Peavey are just a few of the manufacturers that will be there. Entertainment includes sets by Eric Johnson, George Lynch, David Grissom, Johnny Hiland and many more! WTDP? will be roaming the show floor looking for deals and steals. We’ll have a photo gallery up sometime next week. Hope to see you there!

High and tight with Fairfield Circuitry’s Barbershop

Canadian pedal newcomer Fairfield Circuitry has received high praise in the forum circles for its new overdrive pedal – the Barbershop. Those that have test driven the pedal claim the stomp offers something different than the others in the crowded low-to-mid gain overdrive market. The comments motivated us to want to see for ourselves, so we contacted Guillaume Fairfield and asked if we could get a loaner Barbershop. Soon thereafter it landed at WTDP? HQ and we plugged it in. Did we find just another dirt box clone or does the Barbershop truly offer up something unique?

Copeland spreads sunshine on stage

April 13, 2009
At The Gig>

Florida quintet Copeland brought their brand of keys/guitar driven pop to Houston’s Java Jazz recently. The band is touring in support of ‘You Are My Sunshine’, which was released in October 2008. The group played a good mix of old and new songs for the packed house that sang along with every tune. Band leader Aaron Marsh split time between his very nice flame-top Les Paul and his road tested electric piano. Dressed for winter, completed with coat and scarf, Marsh led the group – which includes a pair of brothers, Bryan and Stephen Laurenson, on guitars and Jon Buckalew on drums – through a near two-hour set.

Fuzzhugger offers up dual mode Ab-Synth

April 9, 2009
Industry News>

FuzzHugger(fx) now is shipping version two of their AB-Synth fuzz pedal, which reassigns the oscillation toggle to a second footswitch for hands-free operation and quick switching between the pedal’s modes. The AB-Synth is a harmonic-blasting, light-sabery, layered synth fuzz with tone-shaping gain and texture knobs that take you from searing to splattery. The second footswitch engages a second mode with wild oscillation, blips, self-arpeggiation, more synth tones, and fat octave down. The pedal offers everything from open, to compressed and focused, to sizzling in the standard mode, to beyond-words-crazy in oscillation mode. The new Ab-Synth is $129.

Xotic offers Andy Timmons signature BB Pre

Beginning next month, Xotic Effects will start shipping its limited edition BB Preamp – Andy Timmons signature model to its dealers across the globe. According to the company, the BBP-AT will offer smoother, warmer and more compressed tone than the standard BB Preamp with richer even harmonics. Housed in a durable orange metallic paint, the tones are as beautiful as the pedal. Xotic will make only 1000 pieces of this signature stomp. The pedal will come with Andy’s “Live Resolution” DVD and a certificate of authenticity signed by Andy. The new signature BB Preamp carries a price tag of $210, same as the standard pedal.
