The crew at Catalinbread has begun sketching up a schematic for a potential sequel to its Ottava Magus octave, ring-mod, fuzz stomp. According to the guys, thus far, preliminary features on the updated pedal include Volume, Blend, Gain and Tone contols as well as a toggle for octave up defeat. The company assures that the original Ottava Magus will be used as the ‘heart of this box.’ Catalinbread is striving to achieve the character of the original pedal with the addition of new, great features. If that is achieved, the company will likely move to produce the pedal. Stay tuned!

North Carolina’s He Is Legend has a history of alienating its fan base through changes in direction between records, and they’re about to do it again. Next month, the group releases ‘It Hates You’, its first album on their new label, Tragic Hero. The new record is a great rock album, chock full of aggressive guitar riffs and, perhaps more interestingly, melodic, soulful vocals – a welcome change from the army of screamo bands now populating the hard rock scene. WTDP? has a chance to talk with guitarist Adam Tanbouz about the new record, the songwriting process and his ‘lame’ gear.

Oregon’s own Catalinbread is moving forward with the development of its S.F.T. pedal, which started life as a bass overdrive. Not much is known about the pedal other than the prototype boards are due to be ordered this week and the current version of the pedal offers up everything from cool stoner rock tones a la Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age to 70s-era Rolling Stones rawk and more. The S.F.T. will be fine tuned throughout the summer. No release date has been set. Elsewhere, Catalinbread has given its Teaser Stallion pedal a makeover. The new version is vertically configured and boasts circuit improvements. Peep the prototype design in the thumbnail!
Massachusetts-based FX Doctor posted a video bulletin on its MySpace site showing off a circuit bent noise box prototype it is calling the Firefly. According to the post, the pedal was originally conceived about four years ago, but this new generation version boasts certain improvements. The current prototype has two frequency control knobs and a volume knob along the left side. The Firefly creates its own sound so the guitar input is only there for convenience for live use. You just plug it into your chain and run it through your pedalboard. Go here for the video goodies.
The aptly named Stomp Under Foot is a start-up boutique pedal company out of Massachusetts helmed by Matt Pasquerella. The company currently is offering a pair of pedals – the Tubescreamer-inspired Mean Green Machine and the Screaming Panda. Intrigued, we hooked on to a tour box put together by Matt to take a test drive of the pedals. After a quick demo, we opted to share our thoughts on the Panda with you. The pedal was inspired by the vintage Dimarzio Very Metal stomp from the late 1980s, a pedal that was more Rat-like than metal. In his bid to recreate that sound, with a dash of Big Muff fuzz tossed in, Matt came up with the Screaming Panda.
Sean over at Lovepedal has put his Maori Fuzzmaster stomp for sale. The pedal, which was a tribute to his Uncle and originally was to number only 10, is now available to the masses for $279. He says the pedal is a limited engagement, so if you’re interested you’d better act fast. Sean has also offered a limited re-release of the 2006-spec’d Eternity stomp, which boasts a higher gain factor than other Eternity stomps, for the same price. Hop over to lovepedal.com and check them out, but first… peep the You Tube video of the Maori Fuzzmaster in action after the jump!
More than just a rehash sequel to 2005’s POG, the smaller, XO-style POG2 adds a new attack control to fade in lush, smooth swells and a new second sub-octave to reach deeper than ever before. The 2-pole resonant low pass filter now includes two additional Q modes and the newly enhanced detune feature helps further refine your sound. Perhaps the coolest new function of POG2 is the ability to store and recall eight user presets with a click of a button. According to the company, the POG2 just plain sounds better, thanks to an enhanced algorithm that delivers a more focused and in-the-pocket harmonic performance. The POG2 should be available soon.
Marc over at Skreddy Pedals posted a recent update to his site saying the new Pig Mine pedal, which fills the void left by the retirement of the Top Fuel overdrive, will be build-ready in about another month. Marc says he’s tweaked and refined things more – a process has brought him back to basics. He added that the tone of the Pig Mine is close to the vintage triangle-knob clone of the Big Muff Pi. The new stomp has ’slightly more’ articulation, cut and midrange available. Marc added that the silkscreen for the new pedal is still not ready and apologized for the delay. Best guest? Check the Skreddy Pedals site late in the month for an active Pig Mine pre-order page.
DMB Pedals has a new analog delay stomp that aims to emulate the old tube tape delay systems. Dubbed the Lunar Echo, the pedal is a control-filled tweakfest with five knob controls – Speed, Depth, Level, Tails and Space… two toggle switches – lo/hi-fi and tape/wrecked… and a Take Off footswitch. Step down on the Take Off switch and send the pedal into self oscillation mode for cool sweeps and dynamic volume effects. The Tape/Wrecked three-position toggle offers a delay with no modulation in the middle position. Tape mode brings chorus and warble effects into the mix. Wrecked mode sends the circuit over the edge. Check out a demo video after the jump!
Earthbound Audio is offering a new silicon-based fuzz stomp dubbed the Centurion. The company says the pedal a tweakable twio-transistor wall-of-fuzz unit using BC109 metal can transistors, Wima film caps, Vishay electrolytic caps, Alpha pots and Switchcraft jacks. The pedal has three knob controls – Volume, Mass and Fuzz. The Mass knob controls fatness and sustain. A pair of toggles allows for bass boost/cut and other tonal options. The true bypass pedal is being made in sparkle blue and orange. It can be powered by a 9v battery or industry standard negative tip 9v adapter. A few are out on ebay now for $150.
