Empress Effects has released a new version of their popular Superdelay pedal exclusively through ProGuitarShop.com. The limited edition Vintage Modified Superdelay’s vintage setting has some added modulation that makes the repeats lush and full with a bit of warble. The Old mode has had the high end rolled off a bit with the same modulation and some grit added to produce worn heads and dirty tape on your tape delay. The new Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay still has all the rest of the features and great sounding delays as the original with a new paint job and a little added appeal to the tape and vintage delay fans. The pedal is available now for $449.
Here is your first look at the first offering from the combined forces of Strymon Engineering and Damage Control – the Brigadier dBucket delay pedal. The Brigadier takes the compact aluminum chassis and form factor developed for the Strymon OB.1 and crams in a ‘ton of DSP horsepower’. According to Strymon, the team took a super powerful SHARC DSP and dedicated to doing one thing only – delivering the ‘best analog bucket brigade delay sound ever’. The pedal boasts tap tempo, modulation and true bypass as well. No word on pricing just yet, but the Brigadier is expected to be available sometime in the next six weeks or so. Stay tuned!
With a name like Marion Henry Electric, we really didn’t know what to expect when we reached out to Alex and Co. in an attempt to get a loaner pedal to test drive from their hand-wired, hand-painted and super-colorful line. After some discussion, including how the pedal maker now had the guitar slingers for Umphrey’s McGee using their gear, MHE sent us their two-knob fuzz – the Fuzz Bucket. Like the crew says in their propaganda, the Fuzz Bucket is a drive pedal with a fuzzy nature that offers up broad range of analog fuzz tones. Eager to test drive, we dove right in.
Guitarist Steve Mazur has been with Canada’s Our Lady Peace since near the completion of 2002’s Gravity album when he was tapped to replace founding member Mike Turner. The band has been a mainstay on popular radio since its 1994 debut Naveed, which spawned the hit single ‘Starseed’. Not long after Mazur joined the band, OLP found itself at odds with its record label, its producer and itself. Their next record – 2006’s Healthy In Paranoid Times – was nearly the band’s undoing. WTDP? had a chance to talk with Mazur recently about the his stint with the group, his favorite gear and the band’s love for their new album Burn Burn.
Cheeseblock Customs is offering up the first of its high quality wood enclosure pedals to the masses via eBay. The sCream Cheese true-bypass overdrive boasts Level, Tone and Drive knob controls, as well as a switch offering an extra low end boost and a three-way toggle for different clipping options: LED, asymmetrical diode, and stock. A second ‘channel’ of drive has an adjustable gain boost and dedicated switch. The enclosure is a two piece Birdseye Maple box, hand routed and finished. The knobs are made of Indian Rosewood with abalone dot inserts on the top. Brass hardware was used to join the two halves of the box.
Here is a quick look at a one-off pedal by Dereck over at Tone Freak Effects. The EightUP is an octave fuzz stomp that had been sitting around the Tone Freak lab for a while, but just recently was fully built out. The pedal may or may not go into production. There could be a possibility of a limited number being made and sold directly by Tone Freak. The translucent gold pedal sports three controls – Volume, FuzzUP and a toggle that goes from ‘classic’ to ‘fat’ mode, giving the octave two different voicings. A clip of the pedal, along with Tone Freak’s Abunai, can be heard here.

Alright… a little late to this party, but it is just too cool to go unmentioned. Johnny Matthews and Pedaltrain are offering up a web-based tool that will allow users to build a virtual version of their pedalboard, or dream pedalboard, for download/sharing. Several manufacturers have been added since the tool launched and more are being added almost daily. The Pedalboard Planner currently has over 200 pedals available for use. The tool has had some compatibility issues with Internet Explorer, but works fine with other browsers like Firefox and Safari. Take a tour of the Pedalboard Planner here.
Great weather in Dallas this past weekend had a lot of people out and about, which assisted the foot traffic for the Four Amigos’ Arlington Guitar Show. The show offer plenty of vintage and new four-, six-, seven-, eight- and twelve-string beauties for all to test drive. The show appeared a little light on the manufacturer side, but there was still plenty to look at and/or drool over. I missed the gathering where they tried to set a world’s record for the most guitarists playing ‘Louie, Louie’ at once. Someone let me know how that turned out! You can take a peek at some of the guitar highlights from the show after the jump!
The fine folks at Strymon are at it again with a little audio stimulation based around one of its upcoming pedals – the 0rbit flanger. According to the company, the dBucket technology they are plowing into their upcoming delay is being transfered to the new flanger pedal. What does that mean? An entire SHARC DSP is dedicated to doing only one thing… the ultimate flanger. The new pedal is design to cover the same territory as the famous ADA and MXR flangers. The new pedal will also boast a ‘through zero’ mode. Head on over to Strymon’s website and listen to some teaser clips of the upcoming flanger.
The Arlington Guitar Show this past weekend had a good mix of vintage and new gear… and no shortage of pedals for the tone hungry on a budget. Pedal folks at the show included veterans B.Y.O.C., Gig-Fx and Keeley, locals like ProTone and Rockett… and a newly launched, Austin-based company, Reliquary Amps & Effect Works. Even Gearmandude was on hand with his Lothar Exploding Drive and Luther Drive. Most of the other pedal purveyors were showcasing at least one new offering. For Keeley, it was the new 410 Phaser… Rockett had its Animal overdrive, and ProTone had ithe Premium Overdrives. Check out some pics from the show after the jump!
Dennis at ProTone Pedals has made a name for himself by introducing face-melting, metal-styled pedals with names like Dead Horse, Body Rot and Ram’s Skull. Heck, even his chorus – the Raven – looks intimidating, thanks in part to the fantastic enclosure art by Felix LaFlamme. So it was curious when ProTone chimed in with news of a set of three premium overdrive pedals they had in the works. Even more interesting, their classic and reserved enclosure finish. Obviously a different animal, we bribed Dennis with beer and cookies to send us one. He obliged with the Red Label Premium Overdrive.
The staple in the Four Amigos traveling gear shows – the Arlington Guitar Show – takes place this weekend at the Arlington Convention Center just outside Dallas, Texas. Luthiers, shops and other gear gurus come from the four corners to set up and tout their wares. It is a great show for guitar shopping. How do I know? Because the Strat I use for all of the Your Mileage May Vary pedal reviews on this site (and pictured left) I bought at last year’s show! The show opens Saturday, 17 October at 10am and runs to 6pm. Sunday’s hours are 10am to 5pm. Look for the WTDP? crew combing the aisles for pedal deals. We’ll be in our logo shirts, so stop us and say ‘Hi!’.
