Stomp Under Foot readies The Pi

Matt at Stomp Under Foot will have the first batch of his new fuzz, dubbed The Pi, ready to ship later this week. According to the builder, The Pi is the big, open sounding, gritty, grindy, fuzzy sustain for that ’90s alternative sound like Dinosaur Jr., Mudhoney, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, etc… The Pi is similar to the 1976 Ram’s Head pedal Matt has offered in the past, but The Pi retains its grind and low end a bit better, and chords have that classic wall-of-fuzz tone. The pedal can be ordered directly from the Stomp Under Foot website for $160 plus shipping.

Lotus knows you desire boost

Sean over at Lotus Pedal Designs has introduced a new boost pedal to his line – the Desire Boost. According to the builder, this boost pedal is not your typical clean boost, rather it adds some ‘grit’ to a player’s sound without actually changing the quality of the tone by utilizing a JFET gain stage. The Desire Boost also has very high input impedance designed to act as a buffer. It can eliminate unwanted noise from cables or pick-ups and pull every ounce of desired tone out. The stomp is available now direct from Lotus for $170.

UPDATE: Larry Alan debuts two fuzzes

The crew at Larry Alan Guitars – makers of the Infinity Driver and Phoenix Fire – showed off their new #14 Si and #32 Ge fuzz pedals on facebook this week. A sleek-looking play on the periodic table, the #14 Si Fuzz is touted as a ‘wonderful sounding silicon fuzz that can go from warm to downright nasty’. The #32 Ge fuzz is a germanium fuzz that goes from a ‘warm vintage sound to full out flagrant fuzz’. Both sport a built-in JFET buffer/booster before the fuzz circuit ensures that players will have plenty of saturated fuzz without loading down the tone of the guitar. Both also have Tone and Scoop controls that provide additional control over the sound. No pricing or availability information was given, but keep your eyes on the company facebook page and website for more information. Stay tuned…

RIP Pig Mine, Hello P19!

Marc over at Skreddy Pedals has quietly retired his Pig Mine fuzz, and in its place has created the P19. According to the builder, the P19 boasts lower noise and slightly lower gain than its predecessor. Marc says the new pedal excels in sustaining, biting, legato lead work. The P19 sports three knob controls – Sustain, Volume and Tone. A Flat/Hump mini-toggle will give you either a flat frequency spectrum or a mid-boost with a mild hump. The name is said to be both a nod to the pedals of Pete Cornish (P1, P2) as well as a play on the ‘PIG’ name. The P19 is available for order now via the Skreddy website and costs $195.

73 Effects will get you, my pretty!

The crew at 73 Effects have a new pedal on offer – a boosty, cocked-wah screamer dubbed the Wicked Witch. According to the builder, the Witch is a dirty transistor boost shoved into a vintage Clyde McCoy wah circuit that features a Sabbadius Soul inductor – a Vox halo inductor replica. It creates a solo/lead boost pedal that, according to 73, flat out screams. The boost control adds grit and volume while the Heel-Toe control lets you adjust the wah sweep so you can leave it in one spot. The Range switch gives you three sweep ranges from screechy treble to woofy bass. The Wicked Witch is available through the builder and costs $160 plus shipping.

NAMM: Rockett/Sampson vibe proto debuts

The second prototype from the collaboration between J Rockett Audio Designs and amp guru Mark Sampson was available for test drives at this year’s NAMM show. The Rockett/Sampson Vibe was designed to produce a vintage Magnatone-esque tone. The prototype sports vibe and boost circuits, two Speed controls as well as Mix and Intensity controls. The company is already hard at work on the second revision of the pedal which will have more ‘pitch shifty warble’. The revision will also stereo outs.

The initial Rockett/Sampson pedal – a Vox-like top boost – is still being refined. Both pedals are expected to hit the streets later this year.

Rockett also is working on a Tim Pierce signature overdrive. It is understood the pedal will be similar to the Allan Holdsworth drive, which also debuted at the show, but with more gain. The parties are still working out the specs on the pedal including whether or not to include a boost side. Stay tuned…

NAMM: Egnater dives into pedal pool

Bruce Egnater had a pair of pedals – the beginning of a new line for the company – on display at the NAMM show in Anaheim. The first of the control-ladened new stomps was the Overdose – an analog overdrive and boost pedal that boasts an extremely sensitive Tone control. The Jones control allows for mids sculpting, while Tight adjusts the low end.

The second pedal, Holy Driver, is an analog distortion that can produce both classic and modern metal tones. The EQ along with Egnater’s Tight control allows the pedal to handle lower tunings while staying defined. The pedal also has a built-in gate to provide noise reduction and can also be used as an aggressive ‘cut off’ for tight rhythm playing. While the pedals are still being finalized, they are expected to be priced around $170.

WTDP? Exclusive: Run, Rabbit, Run

While the fine folks at Suhr Guitar are not set up at the NAMM show this week in Anaheim, that didn’t mean that we weren’t poking around to try and find out about their long-awaited next pedal offering. And we did. Coming soon… the new Suhr Jackrabbit tremolo. According to sources familiar with the new pedal, the Jackrabbit will sport five wave options, and quarter note, eighth note and quarter note triplet settings. In addition to being tap tempo controlled, the pedal will also have ‘strum tempo’, which is exactly what it sounds like. The new pedal should be available in the spring. No pricing information is available as yet. Stay tuned…

NAMM: Jack Deville touts switcher proto

The crew at Jack Deville Electronics had a prototype multi-channel switcher on display at the NAMM show this week. The Click-Less Audio Control System, or CLACS-4, is a four-loop switching system with 16 storable presets built on a small, user-friendly pedalboard strip. Users can control multiple effects, amplifiers and instruments with the system… with no tone suckage, according to the company. Utilizing the company’s proprietary Click-less system, it is destined to become the quietest audio relay on the market. A larger CLACS system might also emerge at a later date. Stay tuned…

NAMM: Spaceman lands on Moon Base

Zak from Spaceman Effects had a new offering at NAMM this week… but it wasn’t a pedal. It was the Moon Base headphone/pre-amp. The Moon Base was designed as a headphone amp, but can double as a pre-amp for any variety of uses. Controls include Gain, Tone, Ext and Master as well as independent headphone and instrument 1/4-inch inputs. While the Moon Base was the only new Spaceman item at the show, Zak did share the target for his next pedal offering. He told WTDP? that he has three designs in the pipeline with the next one due for release being a ‘fuzz type thing’. He didn’t want to elaborate on the other designs because he wasn’t sure which would emerge first. Stay tuned…

NAMM: Levana touts phaser, eyes clean octave

Levana Audio had a brand new pedal as well as the second version of a newer pedal on display at the NAMM show this week. The new one is the Phase-One, a phaser/vibe combo with a couple of cool features. The pedal operates like a typical phaser, but sports controls that allow the user to freeze a specific oscillation frequency then, using a tone feature, move it around the sound spectrum to taste. The stomp boasts a pair of foot switches allowing for on the fly freezing and toggling between phaser and vibe effects.

The V2 pedal is the new Mellow-D. The original had the unique jitter control as a mini-toggle on the back of the pedal. Now, that control has been moved to a second foot switch on top of the pedal allowing users to introduce the effect on the fly. A knob control now is available to dial in the jitter effect, which gives a low-fi, digital artifact-feel to the repeats.

Perry also let us know that he is eying a clean octave pedal for the company’s next offering. We’ll have to wait and see if this makes an appearance at this year’s Summer NAMM show in Nashville.

NAMM: Blast Cult are not Dapper Dan men

Relative newcomers Blast Cult had a pair of unique pedal offerings on display at NAMM this week, including a delay housed in a hair treatment can. Murray’s Can is a delay/filter that was made using the company’s own proprietary chip mixed into a ‘secret recipe’ circuit to give the stomp a more dramatic tone, according to the company. The pedal also comes with a comb and a tin of real hair grease.

Also from Blast Cult comes the Channel Blaster – a pick-up system designed for slap bass players that has its own pedal-form preamp. The FET-based pre gives off a warmer, vacuum tube tone, according to the company.

NAMM: EQD debuts pedal duo

Jamie at Earthquaker Devices had a pair of new offerings on display at the NAMM show this week – the Organizer polyphonic organ emulator and the Tone Job active equalizer. The Organizer is an ‘organ-in-a-pedal’ sporting controls for Octave Up, Octave Down, Choir, Direct Signal, Lag and Tone. Like the recently-released Rainbow Machine, the Organizer uses a mix of analog and DSP circuitry with true bypass switching. EQD says the pedal tracks all over the neck on both guitar and bass on both notes as well as chords. The unique Choir control takes a blend of the Octave Up, Octave Down and Direct Signal to give players an additional octave up, +2 octaves up, octave down, +2 octaves down and direct feed with a roomy delay. The pedal is due in March and will retail at $185.

The Tone Job is an all analog active guitar and bass EQ and booster. It was designed to be subtle yet highly effective while dialing in all the right frequencies, according to the company. The Tone Job was tuned by ear using a number of different guitar and amp combinations with the goal of delivering booming low end, chiming highs and cutting mids without being overbearing. The Tone Job will retail for $165 and is slated for a June 2012 release.

NAMM: Analog Alien showcases new SRV fuzz

The crew from Analog Alien – maker of the Fuzz Bubble-45 – have a new pedal on the way. The company showcased the prototype of the new SRV-45 at the NAMM show this week in Anaheim. The SRV-45 is a Stevie Ray Vaughan-inspired fuzz with a defeatable buffer circuit. The overall design is still being refined, but the pedal should be available soon. Pricing also is still being determined, but expect to pay around $160.
