We hadn’t see Eric since he was a teenager fronting his band of brothers on the Picture of 1000 Faces tour. Eric played two shows in the evening time post-NAMM. The one we attended was the Studio Sound International party at the Doubletree. SSI’s family of companies includes Focusrite, Telefunken, Mojave Audio, etc… Along with bassist T.M. Stevens and a variety of drummers, Eric rocked a full set of tunes including a bit of Hendrix and a bit of new stuff off his latest album. Take a listen to the opening cut from the show – and see some pics – after the jump!

<space>
The crew at Rockett Pedals had some interesting news to share at the NAMM show earlier this month. Chris, Jay and the team have hooked up with amp guru Mark Sampson (of Matchless and Star fame) to create a signature line of effects pedals – the first one being a sort of Vox in a box! You might remember that Rockett had a plan to come out with a Vox-y model a while back dubbed the AC63. The pedal got hung up in development, but was always something Rockett wanted to return to. Enter Mark Sampson. After some initial conversation, Mark agreed to look over some of Rockett’s effects. After a brief brainstorming session, the idea of the Vox in a box re-emerged.

The new plan was to get the Vox top boost sparkle and chime in a full-featured pedal. In fact, Rockett calls the new pedal a (Matchless) DC30 meets a Vox top boost circuit. The knob controls on the prototype are Boost Volume, Cut, Volume, Treble and Bass. The toggle switch in the middle is a Mid Boost that is expected to be a three-way that will allow for flat response as well as two positions that will flavor the tone as if the user was playing through ceramic speakers or alnicos. The new Mark Sampson signature line is expected to come in the same style enclosure that is currently housing the company’s Josh Smith Dual Trem. Rockett is targeting a price for the as-yet-unnamed top boost pedal of between $230-$250. The new stomp is expected to be available in late spring.

Rockett and Sampson are already mulling what could be next in the pedal line – possibly the overdrive circuit of a Vox in a stomp or the vibe section of an old Magnatone… the latter being a stereo pedal. Rockett expects the signature line will be limited in availability, but it is unclear if they are going to make these true limited editions with only so many made or if they plan to have only certain dealers to carry the line. Stay tuned!

We saw a lot of cool gear from 3rd Power, Two Rock, etc… Then we came upon the Sanborn Farralon. This handmade amp is a, 22-watt all-tube beauty that houses shimmer, chime and overdrive tones rooted in the ’60s. The Farralon boasts two EL-84 power tubes… three 12AX7s and one 12AT7 pre-amp tubes and one 5AR4 rectifier tube. Controls include Volume, Treble, Bass and Reverb (all tube, foot-switchable spring reverb). The amp has both High and Low inputs and speaker outputs for 4 and 8 ohms. We were smittened, even in the din of NAMM. We can’t wait to give this one a proper test drive.

While the company didn’t have a booth there, Sarge was in the house to talk up the company’s current line and the Nashville Amp Expo. When we pressed a bit about what Creation Audio Labs has in the works and he did pass a few tidbits our way. Later this year, the company will introduce not one, not two… but three new effects pedals designed specifically for bass. We know what two of the three are, but Sarge swore us to secrecy. We think you’ll like ‘em. Stay tuned!

The new stomp is said to offer the classic octave tone of the sixties without the noise and instability, coupled with the tones from the company’s Fuzzulator pedal. The unit has a 1.5 dB gain in the octave mode. All the player needs to do is push the footswitch and the octave is engaged. There is a blue LED to indicate the octave is on. There is a factory preset balance control available to fine tune the tone. Although the unit was designed to be used with fuzz, cool tones can be achieved using the octave by itself. Check out some pics after the jump!

The custom shop wares included a new RC-SC pedal, with SC standing for ‘Select Components’ or the like. This is a new take on the previous RC pedal with high-graded internals to make it rise above the rest. Also on display was a custom shop Stereo X-Blender. No word on price or availability on the new Xotic stuff just yet. From EWS, the crew showed off the new Little Brute Drive. A minimalist take on the previous Brute Drive, the LBD boasts only a single Gain control. Stay tuned!

We understand this is the format that will be used going forward into production for these and any other VL stomps of comparable size. A plexi/glass top with the graphic inlayed will sit atop the pedal. We admit… it’s a cool look – much better than the ruddy red-brown enclosures that housed the pedals a while back. Word on the street is that these will see the light of day, meaning retailers’ shelves, a bit later this year. Stay tuned!

Perusing the pedal rack, we didn’t see anything we hadn’t seen before… until we had a look on the demo stage and saw this. Looks like the crew is working on a dual chorus/flanger pedal for introduction later this year. We don’t know anything more than that, but well keep an eye out for a formal announcement, maybe at Musikmesse this spring. Our friend Bart at effectsdatabase.com got a shot of another Seymour Duncan proto that we did not. Click here to help solve that mystery!

We happened by the Diamond Pedals booth at NAMM last week to see what was new… beyond the Marquis boost and Memory Lane Jr. It seemed we remembered the crew was working on a new dirt pedal a while back, and they were calling the Cornerstone. A glance down at the pedalboard at the show and there it was… in all its prototyped glory! The Cornerstone is outfitted with cascaded gain stages and a bright switch toggle (which will move to the pedal face in production). With the two gain controls, the Cornerstone has a wide range of tones on tap… from clean-ish to serious crunch. A Mid control will allow for additional coloration and character. Stay tuned!

In additional to the ‘sequel’ pedals of the initial trio, the company has plans to introduce a Violet Trem, Blue Move and Gold Boost. The Violet Trem boasts Speed, Intensity and Volume controls. The Blue Move – a chorus – has Speed, Depth and Mix controls. The Gold Boost has a simple Level knob. We didn’t have a chance to get any solid pricing or availability information at the show… but rest assured they are coming. Take a closer look at the pedals below!

The company is jumping into the mini-stomp market with both feet via the introduction of the Mini Mod line. These are curiously-shaped (think elongated Trivial Pursuit wedges), low-cost effects that don’t scrimp on value. The initial pedals in the line include the Fuzzer, Overdrive, Chorus, Delay, Distortion and Flanger. All sport three knob controls and colorful, metal enclosures. The Mini Mods are priced at around $50 and are expected to ship later this year. Stay tuned!

The V-Drive boasts the same TS-style controls in the form of Volume, Tone and Drive knobs. However, additional Depth and Select selector knobs and a Texture knob makes the new stomp a more flexible alternative to its inspiration. The stomp also has a Voltage mini-knob mounted on the top end to allow the user to simulate the ‘dying battery’ tone that some enjoy. The pedal is expected to be available late in the first quarter and sell for only $99.

The pedals were the finished Blueberry Bass Overdrive and the prototype Stone Grey Distortion. The Blueberry is set to hit the market in the next few weeks, while the Stone Grey will be a little later in the year. The Stone Grey is based on Bjorn Juhl’s BFJE Cliffhanger high-gain pedal. The stomp brings a lot of crunch with solid bottom-end and good articulation. Amp-wise, NAMM was the debut of the Old School 11 combo, something we hinted was coming a few months back. Check out the pics after the jump!

The pedal is the company’s digital take on the Leslie spinning speaker. Controls on the Lex include Fast Rotor Speed, Preamp Drive, Mic Distance and Horn/Level knobs as well as Slow/Fast and Bypass footswitches. The pedal should be out this spring and cost $299. By the way, we asked what else might be coming from Strymon in 2011. The answer? “We’re working on some things.” Look for more Strymon goodness by year-end. For now, check out Pete from Strymon demoing the new Lex after the jump!
