The crew at Pigtronix has a pair of pedals set to debut at the NAMM show later this month, and while one is a fairly straight-forward, three-knob overdrive – the other is not. Meet Infinity… Pigtronix’s take on a robust looper. The Infinity boasts discrete analog limiting and transparent pass-thru coupled with seamless recording, playback, dub, undo and redo, on two stereo loop pairs.

The pedal’s Sync Multi mode provides a multiplier function that allows the length of Loop 2 to be one, two, three, four or six times the length of Loop 1. The pedal features 20 loop presets and one blank canvas. The loops can also be run out of sync or even in series for verse/chorus song structures, according to the company. The pedal also has an expression pedal jack for hands free control of overall output and USB access for archival and transfer of your music.

The other new one is called the FAT Drive – a thick, touch-sensitive overdrive built around multiple cascaded gain stages, enabling the pedal to cover sounds ranging from slightly overdriven to rich saturation. The FAT Drive uses a low pass filter for tone shaping. Bringing the tone control all the way clockwise takes this filter completely out of the circuit for hearty low end. Rolling the tone control back smooths out the highs, leaving ample mid-range bloom and bottom end punch, according to the builder. The pedal’s Hi/Lo toggle alters the gain structure for more crunch. The true-bypass FAT Drive runs off standard 9v power, but ships with an 18v adapter for more headroom and overall output.

We’ll have more on these offerings when we land at NAMM next week! Stay tuned…

The Class A Boost pedal that the Pigtronix crew debuted at Winter NAMM last January is now available via the company’s dealer network. The pedal is a single knob ‘Class A’ J-FET tasked with fatten up the sound of any instrument or sound source. Featuring discreet transistor topology (no op-amps), the pedal can boost passive or active pickups and even line level signals up to 20db without ever clipping.

Flat frequency response from 20Hz to 20kHz ensures that your instrument’s tone and expressive character remain intact as signal power is increased. The stomp also is ideal for hitting the front end of a tube amp to achieve an added layer of sweetness and fat tone without unwanted clipping or noise. The Class A Boost runs fine on a standard 9v supply, but ships with a Pigtronix 18v adapter in order to achieve greater headroom and maximum punch. The pedal retails for $149. Check out the demo video featuring Soulive’s Eric Krasno below!

The Tremvelope, which debuted last year, combines stereo tremolo with envelope sensing to provide rotary effects that evolve and change based on what you play. In the envelope-enhanced mode, speed and depth independently increase or decrease in response your playing dynamics. Dial in all new modulation effects where the speed and depth simultaneously change in opposite directions. Other features include sawtooth modulation, multiple expression pedal options, a sidechain trigger input and stereo-panning outputs.

So color us surprised when we happened upon top hog Dave Koltai in the Pigtronix booth at NAMM this week to find a new pedal. A new, one-knob pedal. One knob. The new Class A Boost is a clean boost offering up +20dB of punch. With a classy black and white custom painted enclosure by celebrated pedal painter Myrold, the Class A Boost is slated to hit the market later this year. Check out a close up of this… anomaly… after the jump!

New distortion is flexible, affordable

<space>
Let’s face it… distortion pedals are a dime a dozen. Many have common elements leading to common sounds all under the guise of a different name and unique paint job. Still, there are some distortions that hit the market these days with a little something extra under the hood. This was our hope for the Aria from the New York-based pedal gurus at Pigtronix. The Aria promises a singing distortion tone more powerful than a modded tube screamer and tastier than an old Muff… ahem. We hit up Pigtronix top hog David Koltai to send us an Aria for review, and he obliged. But does this little red wonder deliver on the promise or is it just another buzz box?

The Pigtronix Aria takes a unique approach to diode clipping, according to the builder, that retains the expressive nature of your music while imparting creamy sustain and enhanced harmonic content. The Aria comes with a three-band active EQ that is voiced for maximum versatility. The Aria’s 12dB/octave EQs boost and cut at carefully selected frequencies, allowing the player to adapt to a variety of amps or to craft entirely new tones. The pedal comes in a bright red box that houses the pedal, a User’s Guide complete with sample settings, a non-skid pad to apply to the pedal base if desired, and an 18V DC power supply. The pedal can run on the standard Boss-style 9V DC adapter was well. The pedal does not take batteries.

The pedal has five knob controls – Volume, Gain, Low, Mid and High. The Volume knob controls the level of output from the stomp. The Gain knob layers in the distortion as it is rotated right. The Low, Mid and High knob controls are the pedal’s EQ. When all three EQ knobs are set to noon, the frequency response is flat, retaining the guitar’s natural tone. Rolling any of these knobs right of noon will boost that frequency. Roll left and the appropriate signal is attenuated.

Let’s see what the Aria has under the hood! First with the Strat, bridge pick-up, we’ll dial up some grit that packs a low-end punch. With the Volume knob at noon, Gain at 10 o’clock, Low at 3 o’clock and Mid and High flat, here’s a little taste of the Aria.

Right off the bat, we were fans of the beefiness the Aria delivered to the signal – a tight bottom end and tasteful distortion that did not mud over the chords being played. Over to the neck pick-up, we dial up the Volume and back off on the Gain. With the Volume dimed, the Gain at 9 o’clock, the Low and Mid at 10 o’clock and the High at 2 o’clock, here’s a little arpeggiated riff. First clean, then the Aria.

Santaria lift notwithstanding, the Aria brightens the arpeggio nicely with a touch of drive sizzling underneath. Switching to the Les Paul, we go for a little boom and bloom. With Volume at noon, Gain dimed, Low and High at 3 o’clock and the Mid rolled full left, here is a variation on a sludgy riff from our past. Extra points if you can name the band and song we’re abusing. First clean, then the sweetness!

The Pigtronix Aria is a full featured distortion that can get the job done for a fairly wide range of tastes – from OD sizzle to guttural distortion. We particularly dug the touch sensitivity of the EQ on board… with subtle changes offering an extended palette of gain-flavored tones. We favored the high gain settings on the Aria more than the low gain voices, but with a price around $150 (and seen as low as $99) the real question is… Can you afford not to have a distortion pedal that sounds this tasty kicking around your gig bag? That’s our take anyway… your mileage may vary!

Probably the most talked about pedal at all of Summer NAMM wasn’t an effect at all… instead it was Pigtronix’s slick new effect tool, the Keymaster Re-amp Effects Mixer. As we’ve already told you, the Keymaster sports dual, true bypass FX loops that can run in series or in parallel. The pedal will allow you to run a line level signal out of the recording console, into effects then an amplifier, or back into the console via one simple interface. A parallel blend feature allow you to mix two different effects or effects chains together. Confused? Let Pigtronix top hog Dave Koltai walk you through the rest of the features below!

The P-King is a new combination pedal that takes the best parts of the old Attack Sustain pedal and the Philosopher’s Tone stomp and kicks them into overdrive. A new distortion set-up and controls including hold level, release time, one-shot mode and selectable auto reset make the pedal a compression/sustain monster. Mix in an expression pedal input for additional textures and you’ve got a very versatile tone machine. The P-King will be available a little later this year. Check out the close-up after the jump!
The Aria comes with a three-band active EQ that is voiced for maximum versatility. The Aria’s 12db/octave EQs boost and cut at carefully selected frequencies, allowing the player to adapt to a variety of amps or to craft entirely new tones. Sound clips of the new true-bypass, analog stomp are available at Pigtronix website. Pricing and availability info coming soon. Stay tuned!

David and the Pigtronix crew were also showing off a couple of ‘in process’ pedals including one called the ‘Red Fuzz’ (working name). We gave a listen to each stomp at the Pigtronix booth this morning and they all sound like winners to us. The Envelope Phaser and the Philosopher’s Tone should be available soon.
