It was the Moon Base headphone/pre-amp. The Moon Base was designed as a headphone amp, but can double as a pre-amp for any variety of uses. Controls include Gain, Tone, Ext and Master as well as independent headphone and instrument 1/4-inch inputs. While the Moon Base was the only new Spaceman item at the show, Zak did share the target for his next pedal offering. He told WTDP? that he has three designs in the pipeline with the next one due for release being a ‘fuzz type thing’. He didn’t want to elaborate on the other designs because he wasn’t sure which would emerge first. Stay tuned…

Spaceman Effects Gemini III fuzz a universe of woolly tones

<space>
Fuzz. You love it, right? It seems like the one constant in the gear universe is the relentless pursuit of ‘the’ fuzz tone. Whether it be Hendrix-esque or more Jimmy Page… or the ‘Black Keys’ thing. Fuzz is king. However, one of the reasons guitarists are always on the hunt for the perfect fuzz is the fact that their are just so many of them out there! Muffs and their derivatives. Fuzz Faces and their off-shoots. Silicon-based circuits. Germanium-centric designs. It’s no wonder the search goes on… especially in the world of boutique pedals where there seems to be a new fuzz box released every week! Some builders favor certain ‘ingredients’ when building fuzzes, while others are inclined to work as much into one enclosure… sort of a fuzz gumbo… in the attempt to make ‘One Fuzz to Rule Them All!’ We’re not saying that was the intent of Portland-based Spaceman Effects with the Gemini III Dual Fuzz Generator, but it could have been.

The Gemini III is billed as an all-discrete transistor fuzz that features two different circuits in parallel – one vintage germanium and the other modern silicon. The germanium side uses vintage 70’s-era new-old stock AC128 transistors. The Gemini doesn’t stop there however. The two independent tones can be blended together to achieve a derivative tone. The Gemini III sports three knob controls and three mini-toggles. The knob controls are Master, Filter and Blend. Master is the output control. Filter acts as a sort of tone control. At noon, the Filter has a wide frequency range, with full mids. The Ge/Si Blend knob allows the user to sweep between full germanium and full silicon-based tones. Each circuit has a choice of three gain settings via toggle switch. The third toggle switch controls the direction of the tone sweep for the germanium side, allowing for opposite sweep directions.

Got all that? Good. Let’s check out the germanium side of the Gemini III using the Stratocaster. With the bridge pickup, we’ll take you through each voicing option using the Ge-side toggle. With Master at 10 o’clock, Blend full left (Ge side) and the Filter knob at noon, here is the Gemini III. First you’ll hear the clean amp tone… then position one, then two, then three.

You can tell the tone gets punchier, and a bit more aggressive, as you cycle through the voicing presets. The Ge side offers up nice, thick fuzz tones with good articulation and clean-up. Now we’ll check out the full Silicon side of the Gemini III using the neck pickup on the Strat. With Master at 11 o’clock, Blend full right (Si side) and the Filter still at noon, we’ll go through the voicings again as before. Clean first, then voice one, two and three.

The silicon side of the Gemini III has that predictable hummy feel to it and offers up some fuzz tones on the woolier side of things. Again, the voicing get a bit more assertive and lively as you move from one to three.
Now, switching to the Les Paul, we blend the two fuzz circuits and let you here the full range of the Filter knob. With the Master at 11 o’clock and the Blend pointing straight down (full blend), you’ll hear the Filter at noon first, then full left, followed by full right.

The Spaceman Effects Gemini III is an expressive, full-featured fuzz offering the best of both worlds to any fuzzaholic that loves both germanium and silicon-based wool. There also is more to the pedal than we were able to get into here, with the germanium side sweep control and the sensitivities around the blending of the Ge/Si circuits – there are a lot of usable tones. The only things likely to keep you from adding one of these beauties in your tone arsenal are the relatively limited numbers built, as well as the price. Spaceman only built 90 of the standard issue Gemini IIIs with another 60 special enclosure models – split between copper and white. Also, the standard Gemini III runs a healthy $319 direct from the company. That price might scare away the gearheads that like to gamble with a C-note or two on a newer pedal to experiment with different fuzz tones. Regardless, we believe the Gemini III is the real deal and definitely worth a rocket ride if the opportunity presents itself. That’s our opinion anyway… your mileage may vary.

According to the builder, the Aphelion is a very harmonically rich overdrive pedal, both in even and odd-order harmonics. It boasts a very usable gain range from light sparkle to overdriven tube amp bliss. The Aphelion has three knob controls – Helios, Apsis and Orbit (or Level, Drive and Tone). Each sporting touch sensitive responsiveness. The tone control lets you balance highs and lows, with full range at 12:00. The Aphelion utilizes the vintage RCA CA3080E IC, best known for it’s use in the most sought after vintage compressor pedals (but it’s not being used for compression here).

Pre-orders for the new stomp are open now through 27 August via the Spaceman website. There are two versions that will only be available via pre-order, Polished Chrome and Sparkle Blue. The only way to get these two versions is through this limited-time pre-order and they will be limited to only the amount that is pre-ordered in each color. The chrome version is $290, while the sparkle blue is $260. Pre-orders will ship the week of 5 September. Sound clips are available at the <a href="http://www.spacemaneffects.com/aphelion.htm"Spaceman website.

The Gemini III sports two independent fuzz circuits – one germanium and one silicon. The two fuzzes can be blended together via a Ge/Si knob for a layered fuzz tone. Each fuzz has a choice of three gain settings via a toggle. The Master knob controls the output of the final mix, and has tons of gain on tap. Another toggle switch controls the direction of the tone sweep from the germanium side, allowing for opposite sweep directions. Spaceman will also have a new two-channel selector box – the PX250 – available soon. The Gemini III will run $309. The switcher will be $179.

Spaceman duo aims to launch your tone into the stratosphere

<space>
It’s a tricky combination for a small shop to perfect – small, quality runs of well-built, excellent-sounding pedals that won’t break the bank yet still turn a profit. Now, we don’t pretend to know what some of these one and two-man outfits bring in money-wise, but the fact that they continue to churn out product lends weight to the argument that they are… at the very least… self-sustaining. Enter Spaceman Effects – a Portland-based shop led by Zak M. Spaceman seems to fit that mold rather well, but what we’re all interested in is the ‘excellent-sounding’ part. So let’s check out Spaceman’s Spacerocket fuzz and Mercury III Boost and see what’s what!

Both Spaceman pedals are a well-built, slick mix of chrome and black. Each come in a logo-ed white pedal box and inside a silver pouch emblazened with the Spaceman ‘spaceman’ logo. Each comes with an instruction sheet, stickers and a button or two. The Spacerocket fuzz sports three controls – Level, Fuzz and Tone… but they act a bit different than standard controls. Level, per usual controls the volume… but Fuzz is a three-position switch offering separate, unique voices that can be shaped using the Tone knob by adjusting the high frequency range. The Mercury III Boost also has three knob controls – Boost, Harmonics and Tone. Boost controls the output level and interacts with the Tone knob, which is a selector knob of six frequency ranges. Each tone will sound different in relation to the level of boost applied. The Harmonics knob blends light harmonic distortion into the signal.

Let’s check out the Spacerocket fuzz first. With the Strat, bridge pick-up, we dial up a little rock riffage. With Level around noon, Fuzz toggle in the first position and Tone around 2 o’clock, here is the Spacerocket… first clean, then fuzzy.

At that setting, the Spacerocket boasts good overall body and spatial depth with just a touch of pingy-ness – a solid tone if you’re going after a classic late 60s-era psychadelic vibe. Switching to the neck pick-up, we dial in some mud for a little rock-n-blues. With the Level set at 2 o’clock, Fuzz in the third position and Tone around 3 o’clock, here is the Spacerocket again, first on the launch pad, then blast off!

Great sustain accompanies that fuzzed-up sound, which still displays good warmth and fullness. Over to the Les Paul, we crank things up a notch to heat up the humbuckers. With Level around 2 o’clock, the Fuzz toggle in the second position and Tone dialed back to 9 o’clock, here is the Spacerocket thickening up a chord progression. Clean first, fuzz second.

Moving from the fuzz, we take on the Mercury III Boost – a germanium-based pedal that offers both clean boost capabilities and the ability to overdrive tube amps into crunchier territory. With the Strat first, bridge pick-up, we set up the Mercury for take off. With Boost set at noon, Tone in the fifth position and Harmonics at noon, here is the Mercury doing its thing. First flat, then fat!

The Mercury III really fills that fingered riff making it more dynamic and pronounced. Shifting up to the neck pick-up we drop the boost, but add harmonics. WIth Boost set at 9 o’clock, Tone in the second position and Harmonics at 3 o’clock, here is the Mercury III in orbit. First idle, then vital!

Next we hit a bit of the sizzle shifting over to the Les Paul. Mercury dialed in with Boost at 3 o’clock, Tone in the sixth position and Harmonics dialed back to 9 o’clock – here a little grit with your finger-picking blues. First free, then III!

Both the Spacerocket and Mercury III have so many tones packed into them, it would be impossible – or at least impractical – to get to them all. The clips above are just a small sampling of what each stomp can offer. While the Spacerocket was a fun to play with, and certainly a more than serviceable fuzz, our top affections were held for the Mercury III – a powerhouse of savvy tonal treats. While our clips showcased the Mercury III solo, we can assure that it also plays well with others and can offer a broader sound palette to any pedal arrangement. While the Mercury’s price tag – around $300 – may be off-putting to some, know that it’s abilities exceed that of the standard boost and is worthy of a look if you are seeking to extend your tone beyond its current boundaries. That’s our opinion anyway… your mileage may vary!

The Spacerocket is a discrete silicon transistor fuzz that will be limited to 70 units. The stomp has a simple layout with two knob controls – Fuzz and Level. On top sits a reverse-engraved, hand painted vinyl faceplate with backlit indicator. Instrument attack is reflected by an indicator located in the rocket’s thrust. There are two editions available, blue powdercoat and unfinished silver. Blue is limited to 20 pieces with blue indicator. Silver has a white indicator and is limited to 50 pieces. The pedal is up for pre-order at Spaceman’s website now. It will ship mid-August.

Spaceman Effects has a new boost pedal hitting the market – the Mercury III: Germanium Harmonic Boost. The clean boost function alone can drive a tube amp from a light breakup to thick distortion. The Mercury III also generates tube-like, even-order harmonics, which can then be mixed in with your original instrument signal. Set the Harmonic setting at minimum and you’ll have a clean boost. Turned to max, your tone is now twice as rich in harmonic content, according to the builder. The tone control provides six tone selections – interactive with the Boost and Harmonic controls – and making the Mercury III a full boost, treble boost, bass boost and mid boost in one pedal.

Portland, Oregon pedal start-up Spaceman Effects is now shipping its initial offering – the Rumblefuzz stomp. The outfit calls the Rumblefuzz the ‘warmest, fattest, bassiest fuzz on the planet.’ The three knob controls allow the user to dial in a wide range from light vintage grain to earth-shaking sonic mayhem. The toggle switch adds in a NOS germanium diode, for a slightly more vintage tone. The pedal works great with guitars, basses and synths. Spaceman says it will put out as much low-end as your amp and speakers can handle! The stomp – limited to 50 – runs $199. An even more limited, higher-gain version – limited to just the first five – is available for $219.
